Randwick Guineas Nominations 2013

March 12th, 2013

This Saturday, April 16, Warwick Farm Racecourse will be host to a supercharged day of Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action headlined by the 2013 Randwick Guineas which attracted 16 nominations.

The $500,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) is one of the season’s premier events for three-year-olds but this year is without two notable ace colts with All Too Hard and Pierro both absent from the entries.

Without Pierro, set to run in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, the following week Gai Waterhouse will rely on Proisir to hand her her latest elite level, the promising Choisir colt last seen running a game first-up third behind Pierro in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in the wet at Rosehill on March 2.

They will face a tough test on Saturday however with plenty of other talented youngsters in the mix including two from the stables of Chris Waller with his duo of Group 1 Kiwi expats Tougher Than Ever and Sacred Falls.

General Nediym colt Tougher Than Ever has had two runs down under for Waller most recently a good second in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm and were scratched from last weekend’s Chipping Norton Stakes in favour of the Randwick Guineas this Saturday.

Sacred Falls meanwhile is also in with a genuine chance, the NZ 2000 Guineas winner out to improve on her first-up fifth in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) last month.

Other Group 1 winners among the Randwick Guineas 2013 nominees include the Murray Baker-trained It’s A Dundeel who won the Spring Champion Stakes last year coming off a Hobartville Stakes fourth, and the undefeated Ferlax who retained a perfect four-from-four record last start with an upset win in the Australian Guineas over the Flemington mile – this Saturday to be their first start in Sydney.

Other notable hopefuls include the Peter Snowden-trained Sandown Guineas winner Tatra, Gary Portelli’s Royal Sovereign Stakes champ Rebel Dane who will relish the run at their home track and the John O’Shea-trained Ashokan.
