Exciting Field Nominated for 2014 Randwick Guineas

March 11th, 2014

A talented field of 20 has been nominated for the 2014 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) this Saturday, with in-form miler Dissident hoping to continue a strong start to his current preparation.

Having finished outside the places on only three occasions to date, Dissident was unlucky to run second behind Zoustar in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 14th; arguably his best competitive performance to date.

Having returned to the track in strong form in 2014, the exciting Sebring colt followed up a strong second behind fellow Randwick Guineas nominee El Roca in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up with a resounding win over Atlante and Savvy Nature in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) most recently.

Trainer Peter Moody has an understandably high opinion of his classy three-year-old, and is confident Dissident will continue his near-perfect start to 2014 in the Randwick Guineas this weekend.

El Roca has also returned to the track this year in top form, claiming the Eskimo Prince Stakes by two lengths first-up before finishing an unlucky second to Terravista in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) last weekend.

Despite a hiccup in preparations leading into his maiden tilt at a Group 1 title this year, trainer Trent Busuttin believes El Roca is the real deal, and will be particularly hard to beat of allocated an ideal gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.

Criterion has quickly built to the task at hand since returning for fourth in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) on February 15th, finishing a close second to champion Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington last time out.

Having trialled well over a mile in that event, trainer David Payne is understandably confident of going one better in the Randwick Guineas this weekend before a likely tilt at the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in April.

Bart and James Cummings-trained Eurozone produced an incredible turn of foot to finish an unlucky second behind Moment Of Change in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes first-up of February 8th, and sprinted slightly too early to finish fourth in the Australian Guineas two weeks ago.

Having firmed as a leader in betting markets for both prior events this campaign, is appears only a matter of time until the talented Northern Meteor colt breaks through for his maiden Group 1 victory, and will be particularly tough to beat third-up in the Randwick Guineas of Saturday.

A final field of 20 and barrier draws for the 2014 Randwick Guineas is scheduled to be released on Wednesday.
