Strong Field Confirmed for 2014 Randwick Guineas

March 12th, 2014

A less-than capacity field of 15 has been confirmed to take to the course on Saturday to contest the major 2014 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), with several in-form runners vying for maiden success at the top level of Australian racing.

Having claimed four wins from eight starts to date, Eurozone (barrier 4) has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Randwick Guineas third-up this weekend.

The talented Northern Meteor colt produced an incredible turn of foot in the final straight of the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up in February, and was unlucky to finish second by a nose to in-form runner Moment Of Change, before peaking too early in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) last time out and finishing fourth.

Trainer Bart and James Cummings are readying the talented three-year-old for an appearance in the Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th, and are confident of opening the chance of a double in the Randwick Guineas this weekend.

Exciting colt Criterion (Barrier 8) has built to the task in two races so far this season, finishing a competitive fourth in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) first-up before kicking well to claim second behind champion Shamus Award in the Australian Guineas most recently.

With the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) looming as the major target for the in-form son of Sebring this campaign, trainer David Payne is confident of success over the traditional path for Criterion, who will also appear in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 29th.

Featuring as one of only three runners to carry winning form into the 2014 Randwick Guineas along with Singing Flame (barrier 10) and Show The World (barrier 7), Dissident will have to overcome the awkward barrier 13 if to successfully build off a victory in the Hobartville Stakes (1400m) last time out.

Arguably one of the most consistent competitors of the 2013 spring, Dissident was unable to break through for a maiden Group 1 victory, but was unlucky to finish second by a nose to talented colt Zoustar in the Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 14th.

El Roca was perhaps the runner most disadvantaged by this morning’s Randwick Guineas barrier draw, having been allocated the particularly awkward barrier 14.

El Roca strolled home to claim the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes first-up on February 15th, and was somewhat inconvenienced when removed from the final field of the Hobartville Stakes two weeks ago.

Having run an unlucky second in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) last weekend, trainer Trent Busuttin is confident his stable’s star can overcome the poor barrier and figure in prime position in the dying stages of the Randwick Guineas.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has been confirmed to saddle the most runners of any trainer in the 2014 Randwick Guineas, having accepted positions in the final field for hopefuls Bull Point (barrier 9), Romantic Touch (barrier 15) and Woodbine (barrier 11). is currently displaying the best odds all races this weekend, including the 2014 Randwick Guineas!
