March 14th, 2014

Having returned to the track in typically strong form this preparation, talented three-year-old El Roca is currently featuring as outright $4.20 favourite in betting markets for the 2014 Randwick Guineas ahead of Atlante ($6), Dissident ($8) and exciting prospects Eurozone and Bull Point, sharing the fourth line of betting at a quote of $8.50.

Can El Roca break-through for his first Group 1 victory in the Randwick Guineas, or will one of his 14 classy opponents cause an upset?

Criterion ($13)

David Payne-trained runner Criterion had quickly built to the task at hand in 2014, following up a competitive fourth in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) first-up with a strong final straight sprint for second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) most recently. While allocated the central barrier 8 for the Randwick Guineas; a gate that can cause hassles to some runners, the classy Sebring colt has made a habit of overcoming particularly poor gates previously and should not be inconvenienced at all this weekend. At current odds of $13, Criterion offers punters incredible value for success in Saturday’s Randwick Guineas.

Atlante ($5)

Talented colt Atlante has not finished outside the places in six race starts to date, including a comfortable victory in the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) in New Zealand on November 9th. The Fastnet Rock colt was arguably the biggest winner at Wednesday’s barrier draw, having received the ideal gate 5. Atlante has also returned to the track in strong form this preparation, and will be tough to beat if in handy position rounding the final turn.

Eurozone ($8.50)

Having figured as a leading contender in both his 2014 appearances so far, Eurozone was unlucky to finish second by a nose to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up, and was unable to sustain a late sprint when finishing fourth in the Australian Guineas most recently. Punters have responded to Eurozone receiving the ideal barrier 4 for the Randwick Guineas this weekend, and have in-turn instilled the Northern Meteor colt as clear market mover at a particularly generous price of $8.50.
