Hallowed Crown Aimed at Randwick Guineas 2015

January 15th, 2015

While an Australian Guineas nomination will be made for Golden Rose winner Hallowed Crown this autumn, the James & Bart Cummings-trained colt is unlikely to race in Melbourne as he targets a Sydney win in the 2015 Randwick Guineas.

Co-trainer James Cummings, who prepares horses in partnership with his Cups’ King grandfather, said the Street Sense three-year-old was preparing for the ‘big Randwick mile’ this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

His first major aim is the $600,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on March 7.

“The Randwick Guineas is a primary early target and that will tell us a lot more about where we go from there,” Cummings told RSN’s Racing Ahead.

“The horse is really building up to that big Randwick mile in all the work he does now.

“We’re pretty happy with him.”

On the first day down in Melbourne the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse, with Cummings saying it would be foolish not to nominated Hallowed Crown for that race as a back-up.

“I gave that (a run in Melbourne) strong consideration but was worried about the pattern of running a horse first-up in Melbourne when his main targets are all in Sydney,” he said.

“So he’s not going to Melbourne.

“But it would be foolish to not at least nominate for the Australian Guineas.”

A winner of all but one of his five career starts to date, Hallowed Crown’s biggest win to date was in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in September.

After that he raced flat at Randwick in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) when stepped down in distance on October 4.

Cummings is confident the horse will be back to his best this preparation however describing his condition as “fantastic” and saying he was ready to trial in the next couple of weeks.

“Fantastic, he’s doing really well for us,” he said.

“He galloped this morning over 800 metres and he’ll trial over the coming weeks.

“It’s very satisfying to see him come back with a good deal more meat on him.”
