2015 Randwick Guineas Remains an Option for Kermadec

February 5th, 2015

A standout over the late stages of the 2014 Spring Carnival, trainer Chris Waller has revealed talented three-year-old Kermadec will return to racing this weekend ahead of an autumn campaign likely to be geared towards the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 7th.

Failing to finish worse than second over his maiden campaign, Kermadec has not been seen at the races since charging home to take out the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 1st.

Revealing the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on the same day may also figure for the son of Teofilo, Waller said Kermadec still has some improvement to make but is confident of further black type success through autumn.

“Kermadec has come back well and he galloped nicely on Monday morning, indicating that he still has a bit of speed there,” Waller said.

“Race experience is the key for him and he just needs to get a bit more before he hopefully takes on the Randwick or Australian Guineas third-up from a spell, which would be his sixth career start.

“They could be a bit sharp for them, but as long as he is attacking the line and showing he has come back well then I will be more than happy.”

Performing well in three Rosehill barrier trials prior to his racing debut, Kermadec debuted with an impressive victory in the Mossman @ Vinery Plate (1400m) on September 28th.

Jumping from the gates poorly in the City Tatts Inglis Bonus (1600m) on October 18th, Kermadec was unable to completely recover, but displayed an exceptional turn of foot late to finish just off the pace of Muscovado in second.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Randwick Guineas is due to be completed at released by midday, March 4th.
