2015 Randwick Guineas the Target for Scissor Kick

February 6th, 2015

Trainer Paul Messara conceded Scissor Kick was unlucky not to break through for a maiden victory at the highest level over the 2014 Spring Carnival, but has revealed the talented colt will be set for another attempt in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1400m) on March 7th.

Finishing outside the places just twice in his six start career so far, Scissor Kick has not been seen at the races since finishing a disappointing ninth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st; having been caught on the ‘slow’ side of the Flemington track.

Confirming Saturday’s Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) will figure as the son of Redoute’s Choice’s first point of call this season, Messara told AAP he is thrilled the condition of the three-year-old and rates him as one of the best he has saddled.

“I’ve had some good horses before and he’s as good as any I’ve had,” Messara said.

“When you get a good horse like this, if they can stay sound and healthy, I really think it’s only a matter of time (until he wins a Group 1).

“I expect him to go into this, certainly not peaking, but trying to have him ready to peak in a month’s time for the Group One, the Randwick Guineas. That’s the goal,” Messara said.

“But he’s certainly fit enough and well enough to run very well and capable of winning the race.”

Beating just one runner home in a minor over 1200m on debut on March 5th before immediately returning to the paddock, Scissor Kick immediately stamped his claims as one to watch upon resuming in spring; taking out the More Than Ready NMW (1250m) first-up before making a successful transition to black type racing in taking out the Listed Rosebud (1200m) on August 9th.

Continuing his impressive run through the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) on August 23rd, Scissor Kick displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight of the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), finishing a short head behind Hallowed Crown in second.

Placing second in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) in what was his only other start prior to the Stud Stakes, Scissor Kick is currently rated a $15 chance for success in the 2015 Australian Guineas with Ladbrokes.com.au.
