2016 Randwick Guineas an Option for Redzel

January 19th, 2016

Three-year-old Redzel completed a strong performance to finish third in a Rosehill Gardens barrier trial and Tuesday morning and appears in line for a strong 2016 Autumn Carnival campaign likely to be geared towards a race like the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Redzel immediately impressed upon debuting to racing through the late stages of the 2015 Autumn Carnival; winning a Warwick Farm minor over 1100m before placing a credible third in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on Day 1 of The Championships, but failed to make anything of an impact through the spring starts.

Having hit the line well for third behind Sooboog and Happy Galaxy in the open 900m trial on Tuesday morning, jockey Brenton Avdulla was impressed with the feel offered up by the Snitzel gelding and is confident he will progress into a serious black type contender this time.

“He left the gates well and just tucked him in behind the speed,” Avdulla told puntersshow.com.au

“They didn’t go overly quickly in the trial but he travelled really comfortably for me.”

“Just as he straightened up I gave him a little click along and he really worked to the line nicely.”

“I haven’t had much to do with him. To me he is in a good frame of mind and has a good attitude about him and he is going well.”

“He will take good improvement off his trial today so it just depends if Pete wants to give him another trial or not. I am sure when he sends him to the races he will be very competitive.”

Co-trainer Peter Snowden revealed the horse will return to racing in a minor Sydney sprint race and believes he’ll likely be a different prospect of success following a gelding.

“I want to start him off in a benchmark race, he needs to build his confidence so we won’t be going in to the deep end first-up,” Snowden said.

“He might be a different horse now that he is gelded.”

Redzel returned to racing in spring for fifth in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m); failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) before again finishing fifth in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Randwick most recently on September 19th.
