The $1 million Group 1 Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) is one of two elite levels on the Sydney card for the weekend and is supported by the weight-for-age $500,000 Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

A bumper 21 youngsters make up the Randwick Guineas nominations this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the early entries led by the Chris Waller-trained stablemates Press Statement and Vanbrugh.

Press Statement is the one to beat according to the bookies and the pre-field Randwick Guineas odds.

Already a dual Group 1 winner over the distance, the son of Hinchinbrook took out the JJ Atkins in Brisbane as a two-year-old and last October’s Caulfield Guineas in Melbourne.

Saturday is his attempt at a Sydney Group 1 to add to the record and will be his first run under race conditions at the track.

He comes off the perfect lead-up however having won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 20, a race both Dissident (2014) and Hallowed Crown (2015) won on way to their Randwick Guineas victories in the past two years.

Waller’s other Randwick Guineas hope this season is fellow Group 1 winner Vanbrugh who took out the Spring’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at the track.

He too is second-up on the weekend, but needs to improve on his luckless 10th when beaten over five lengths in the Hobartville.

Along with the winner Press Statement the other two best out of the Hobartville Stakes trifecta nominated for a rematch in the Randwick Guineas are runner-up Le Romain land the Anthony Cummings-trained third placegetter Montaigne.

Kris Lees’ consistent Hard Spun gelding Le Romain is yet to finish out of the money in his six career starts, but is also yet to win in black-type company.

The lightly-raced Montaigne has had just the four runs to date for two wins, a second and the Hobartville third that was his first stakes assignment.

The other most notable last start winners in the mix along with Press Statement are the Michael Moroney-trained Tivaci and Risque for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig who have a total of four Randwick Guineas nominees for 2016.

High Chaparral colt Tivaci made it two on the trot backing up from a non-black type win first-up to take out the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) narrowly over Palentino who runs in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) this weekend.

Stablemate Tulsa ran third in the same race and is another Moroney-trained nominee for the Randwick Guineas.

Risque is one of three fillies nominated to take on the boys on the weekend, the last Randwick Guineas winning filly being Mosheen (2012).

The Kiwi expat had her first Australian run on February 13 for a half-length win in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, which followed her Group 1 NZ Thousand Guineas (1600m) success last November.

The two other Randwick Guineas nominated fillies this year are also trained by Lindsay Park’s Hayes & Dabernig with Sacred Eye and Melbourne’s Thousand Guineas winner last time in Stay With Me.
