Waller Wary of Classy 2016 Randwick Guineas Field

March 1st, 2016

Trainer Chris Waller has been understandably thrilled with the results posted and class displayed by three-year-old Press Statement so far but concedes the colt will have to be at his best to win Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Press Statement immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow upon debuting to racing in late autumn 2015 but undoubtedly found career-best form to date over the backend of the recent Spring Carnival, highlighted by a resounding win in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10th.

Having charged home to win the key form-indicating Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill first-up a fortnight ago, Waller told AAP he is confident the Hinchinbrook colt can get the job done in the 2016 Randwick Guineas but concedes the pressure is on for the stud-bound three-year-old.

“He’s got class and he shows that,” Waller said.

“But I’m very mindful he is a high-profile colt and it does put the pressure on.

“It’s the trainer’s job not to bugger it up.”

Taking out a pair of minor Sydney sprints upon debuting in late spring, Press Statement displayed his worth when comfortably winning the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben in only his third competitive start.

Resuming in spring for a close second in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), Press Statement failed to figure when fifth in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 12th but responded in the best way possible when taking out the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) by three lengths a fortnight prior to his Caulfield Guineas triumph.

Jumping from the gates well in the Hobartville Stakes first-up, jockey Hugh Bowman allowed Press Statement to stride forward and take an ideal position just off the pace of the race’s early leaders.

Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, Press Statement produced a typically smart sprint to pull clear of his rivals and hit the line close to three lengths ahead of closest competitor Le Romain.

The 2016 Randwick Guineas field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
