Thirteen Confirmed in 2016 Randwick Guineas Field

March 2nd, 2016

Thirteen three-year-olds have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m); highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting racing prospects.

Press Statement has arguably been the standout of the current three-year-old crop but will require luck in running in the Randwick Guineas after being allocated the wide and awkward barrier 12.

Stamping himself as one to watch upon debuting to racing in late autumn last year, Press Statement capped his maiden preparation with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m), in what was only his third competitive start.

Returning in spring for a close second in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), the Hinchinbrook colt failed to fire in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) but responded in the best way possible in taking out each of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Having resumed this time for a comfortable win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, Hugh Bowman retains the ride on the colt who should prove very hard to beat.

Montaigne received an ideal tune up for the Randwick Guineas when third in the Hobartville Stakes first-up and could very well receive the run of the race on Saturday from the ideal barrier 3.

Trainer Anthony Cummings has a big opinion of Montaigne, who debuted to racing for a close second in the Schweppes Maiden Plate (1100m) on January 7th, despite an early check.

Breaking through for a maiden race win in the More Than Just Winning Maiden (1400m) on January 20th, the Road To Rock colt repeated the dose in the Colin Tidy Tribute BM78 (1600m) in his only other start prior to the Hobartville Stakes.

Stay With Me is the only filly confirmed in the 2016 Randwick Guineas field and will carry a race-low 54.5kgs from the ideal barrier 5 in the race for three-year-olds.

A daughter of prominent mare Miss Finland, Stay With Me won the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) in September before a luckless run for sixth in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).

Responding particularly well with a resounding two length win in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 10th, the Street Cry filly returned to the paddock after finishing sixth amongst open company in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

Having resumed this time for fifth in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), Stay With Me progressed to third in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) last weekend and will relish a return to a mile on Saturday.

Mike Moroney is spoiled for choice with two talented three-year-olds colts currently in work in Tulsa and Tivaci, and has elected to saddle the former in the 2016 Randwick Guineas while the latter will contest the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.

Resuming this time for eighth in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m), the Sebring gelding savaged the line for third in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago and appears primed for a big performance on Saturday.
