Super star filly Mosheen again overcame a horror barrier draw in a Group 1 race as she took top honours in the 2012 Randwick Guineas in Sydney today.

Coming off an amazing win from the outside barrier in the wet in the Australian Guineas, the race at one stage looked as if it may have been beyond the Robert Smerdon trained horse.

Even Smerdon was not convinced the Fastnet Rock filly could get home in front as the horses came in to the final 200 metres.

“She was getting a bit of a buffeting. I’d probably conceded at the 200 metre mark that she would run well but would probably run out of time,” Smerdon said.

Smerdon was full of praise for the horse who showed she can really accelerate at the business end of the race.

“She’s got that great turn of foot, she really can quicken,” he said.

“She’s done everything we’ve thrown at her.”

With 500 metres to go in the race, it looked as if a Hobartville Stakes repeat could be on the cards with Wild And Proud and Manawanui battling for the lead.

Sydney jockey Tommy Berry called for Manawanui to respond and he did initially but ran out of puff in the middle of the home straight.

Despite some bumps from a few of the other horses, Danny Nikolic managed to get champion horse Mosheen a clear path down the straight and once the filly got her opening, she showed her class.

The turn of speed was extremely impressive and she eventually won the race by a head in front of New Zealand’s Said Com and Gai Waterhouse trained Laser Hawk.

Nikolic was delighted after the race with the horse thatnow has six wins from 13 starts.

“She’s my little class act, she’s a little ripper,” Nikolic said.

“She’s just got the gears and she will relax and take any run. It got a little bit tight there a couple of times.

“She’s really relaxing well. From about the 1200 [metre mark] I knew I was going to be hard to beat.”

Next up for Mosheen will either be the Rosehill Guineas on March 31 or the Vinery Stud Stakes.

With the Randwick Guineas all done for another year, the attention turns to a host of top class races across the country.

The likes of the Golden Slipper and The BMW are still to come this Autumn and the place to find the best value is bookmaker.com.au.

The 2012 Randwick Guineas nominations have now been released with 23 smart three-year-olds entered for the latest Group 1 of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival this Saturday March 17, 2012.

Running at Royal Randwick Racecourse, the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) is shaping up as a scintillating clash between the likes of Australian Guineas winner Mosheen and reigning Golden Rose hero Manawanui.

Mosheen and Manawanui will dominate the Randwick Guineas betting odds at bookmaker.com.au

Opting to miss the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 24, connections of ace Fastnet Rock filly Mosheen have chosen to give the Robert Smerdon-trained superstar her shot against the boys once again.

Winner of the Crown Oaks last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, Mosheen made history last start when she on the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington from barrier 16 of 16 – the first horse to do so from double digits.

While she goes to Sydney for the first time since her second to Sepoy in last year’s Golden Slipper and also races at Randwick for the first time, confidence in ‘Camp Mosheen’ is high.

“We’re delighted how she’s going,” Smerdon said.

“She got through her Guineas win in terrific order, she hasn’t missed a beat.”

Jockey Danny Nikolic, aboard for all but one of Mosheen’s 12 career starts to date, agrees that Mosheen has the class and ability to take out the Randwick Guineas 2012.

“The run from the Australian Guineas hasn’t hurt her,” he said.

“There’s still plenty of upside to her.

“She’s really enjoying being in work

“She’s at the top of her game.”

It truly is a start-studded list of 2012 Randwick Guineas nominations with the other headliner being Manawanui.

Ron Leemon’s Oratorio gelding lost the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) upon protest last time out to the fellow Randwick Guineas entry Gai Waterhouse-trained Wild And Proud.

On Saturday Manawanui will be ridden by Tommy Berry for a second time with regular rider Glyn Schofield serving suspension.

Along with Mosheen and Manawanui the other Group 1 winner nominated for the Randwick Guineas is Spring Champion Stakes hero Doctor Doom, Guy Walter’s Doemsday gelding coming off a seventh in the Hobartville Stakes.

Meanwhile one of Sydney’s premier horsemen Peter Snowden has nominated a quartet from his stables for the Randwick Guineas all coming via the Hobartville Stakes with Commands colt Ambidexter (4th), Group 3 Inglis Carbine Club Stakes winner over the mile Galah (9th), Ad Valorem colt Free Wheeling (10th) and last year’s narrow Victoria Derby runner-up Induna (11th).

Other Hobartville Stakes runners that are a chance of backing up in the Randwick Guineas include the Paul Messara-trained Rekindled Alliance and Group 2 winning Perth raider King Saul.

Adding further interest to the list of Randwick Guineas nominations 2012 is New Zealand-trained colt Ocean Park, winner of the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) in January before their last-stat second at home in the Group 3 Waikato Guineas (2000m).

There are two other Group-status races on the Royal Randwick race card for Saturday with the $125,000 Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) for two-year-old fillies and the $125,000 Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) which is the colts and geldings’ equivalent.

The Randwick race acceptances revealing the 2012 Royal Randwick final field will be taken on Wednesday and published right here so make sure you bookmark this site.

Laser Hawk has earned himself a start in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at Randwick Racecourse on March 17, 2012, after winning his first-up start last weekend.

The three-year-old-gelding made it three wins from three starts in the $70,000 Quakers Inn 3YO Handicap at Rosehill last Saturday.

Gooree Stud manager, Andrew Baddock was thrilled with his most recent performance.

“He was first up today at 1500m and with any other trainer you would have your heart in your mouth but when Gai (Waterhouse) says they are fit enough to win, she is usually right,” Baddock said after the race.

“We’ve got a big opinion of Laser Hawk and he might be our Australian Derby horse.”

Laser Hawk is the half-brother to impressive galloper Desert War.

“This horse has a big motor – just like Desert War,” Baddock said.

“Laser Hawk is a big lump of three-year-old. Not quite as big as Desert War, but not many horses are.

“If he’s half as good as his half-brother, then we will be happy.”

Jockey Jim Cassidy rode Laser Hawk to his most recent victory.

“He’s a very promising horse,” Cassidy said.

“This was only his third start, his first in Saturday city class, and he has won well.

“The further he goes, the better he will be; he has ‘mile-and-a-half’ written all over him.”

The 2011 Randwick Guineas or ‘Turnpoint Guineas’ will jump as Race 6, the feature event at Warwick Farm on Saturday March 12.

There’s a whole host of horses presenting themselves as chances based on career results, but our Randwick Guineas Tips have sorted out the contenders from the pretenders.

Our pick to cross the line first paying $6.50 on Luxbet is Retrieve at very decent value.

The Peter Snowden runner came second in the Hobartville Stakes behind Ilovethiscity, third in last year’s Victoria Derby and hasn’t missed a place ever except for a fourth on debut.

We’ve picked him to get the better of Ilovethiscity ($2.70) based purely on that consistency as the Grahame Begg charger has proved throughout his career he can be a little bit hit and miss.

He’ll certainly be good enough for second spot though with Skilled ($4.60) to grab yet another third place.

Skilled was third in the Hobartville Stakes and third in the Royal Sovereign and from barrier three we’re tipping yet another place.

In essence we’re liking the Hobartville Stakes as a genuine lead up event for the Randwick Guineas with the same three horses to take out the placings, just a switch at the top.

In fourth adding a bit of money to your first four payouts will be the largely overlooked Top Drop.

He’s been consistent running with these horses in previous events and with barrier four we feel he might be able to do a bit of damage despite being a $16 outsider.

Take up these fixed price odds now by registering an account with Luxbet.

At the same time remember to claim your sign up bonus worth up to $400!

Simply make your initial deposit and it will be matched 100% right up to an industry leading $400 free bet!

The Final Field for the 2011 Randwick Guineas or’ Turnpoint Guineas’ has been released and the $500,000 in prize money is certainly going to have to be earned at Warwick farm this Saturday March 12.

An absolute smorgasbord of talent will be on offer with the 11 starters having already had a number of runs so far on this Autumn campaign.

Leading the way as the best rated runner will be Ilovethiscity, fresh off his tremendous win in the Hobartville Stakes where he accounted for many of the same horses which will line up against him in the 2011 Randwick Guineas.

One of those horses will be the Hobartville Stakes runner up Retrieve, one of the most consistent horses racing in Australia today.

Another big threat is Skilled which beat Ilovethiscity across the line two starts back in the Royal Sovereign and placed third in the Hobartville Stakes.

Others include Pressday and Masquerader which are both desperate to find some form part way into a so far underwhelming Autumn season.

Not to be forgotten is the underrated Top Drop as well as the ever present Light Brigade which likes to get out quickly and with a bit of non-secular intervention could feature in the money.

A full preview isn’t far away so stay tuned for our picks to come later in the week.

One thing you won’t have to wait for though is access to the best odds through the Tabcorp owned Luxbet.

In fact you don’t even need to wait for your next pay cheque because at Luxbet today they’ll match your initial deposit with a free bet!

So get twice as much for half the cost and eliminate the risk with Luxbet today.

Nominations have been released for the 2011 Randwick Guineas which this year will be held at Warwick Farm on Saturday March 12.

There are 14 horses still in contention for the run over 1600m worth up to half a million dollars.

There were whispers the controversial move away from Royal Randwick would lessen the talent on offer but that’s not the case with no shortage of quality to line up behind the gates.

The 2011 Randwick Guineas will be headlined by in form Ilovethiscity which won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes in impressive style last start.

He’s previously had only the single Group 1 attempt in his career where he didn’t have a lot of luck in the Golden Rose but still managed a third placing.

Retrieve will also be a starter and hoping to turn the tables on his last start nemesis.

Retrieve ran second in the Hobartville Stakes but there was plenty to suggest a different run on a different track and he has the form to topple Ilovethiscity.

Yet again we will see Pressday and Masquerader in the field and they surely will continue to drift with punters.

Two horses which offered so much of the start of the campaign have failed quite badly, amplified by Pressday virtually walking out of the gates last start.

Masquerader did show some form to finish fourth but both horses have disappointed a lot of punters so far this preparation.

One positive is you’re likely to get relatively decent odds for two horses which at one stage were looking like Australian Guineas favourites.

One of the ones to watch in the 2011 Randwick Guineas will be the Michael Moroney trained Absolutelyawesome.

After being emergency in both the Victoria Derby and Australian Guineas Absolutelyawesome will finally get to prove himself in a Group 1 field.

“He missed the derby by one and the guineas by four, and I just want to get him into one of these big races,” said trainer Michael Moroney.

“I have nominated for a midweek race here just in case he doesn’t get a start up there, but I think he is up to running against the best.”

Other noteable nominations include Praecido, Light Brigade and last week’s market mover Top Drop.

Full betting markets and a complete form guide will be available for the Randwick Guineas as soon as final acceptance’s are announced.

In the meantime you can still get yourself ready for this weekend’s Randwick Guineas by registering an account with Luxbet.

Right now the Tabcorp owned bookmaker is offering a free bet worth up to $400!

There’s no doubt a risk free $400 investment on the 2011 Randwick Guineas really could have you chortling all the way to the bank.

The 2011 Randwick Guineas has been moved from its traditional venue at the esteemed Royal Randwick Racecourse to Warwick Farm in a controversial decision by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC).

The AJC has granted permission for the Future Music Festival to take priority over one of the country’s premier three-year-old races on Saturday March 12, forcing the opening Sydney Autumn Carnival race meeting to take place at the substandard Sydney course at Warwick Farm.

The Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) along with the four other Group status races held at the meeting were not able to be moved to another race date.

The move has infuriated local trainers who are now considering bypassing the Randwick Guineas with their star three-year-olds and racing their horses in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington a week earlier on March 5.

Improving three-year-old Shoot Out overcame a slow start and tough run to claim a powerful win in the $350, 000 Group 1 Turnpoint Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday, giving Gold Coast trainer John Wallace his first Group 1 victory in 28 years.

Shoot Out began as the odds-on favourite at $3, but looked uncertain to score after missing the start and then settling well back in the field before copping interference on the straight.

But the impressive High Chaparral gelding fought back for the win and defeated the Gai Waterhouse-trained Viking Legend ($12) by three quarters of a length with Captain Sonador ($12) claiming another third place in a Group status race just a short-neck away.

After a troublesome run, Shoot Out showed great determination and pulled out an extraordinary late burst to overtake three of his rivals in the closing stages of the race, after nearly falling at the 250m mark, to come away with the win.

Other fancied runners also had a poor run but were not able to fight back and make up the ground including sixth placegetter Monton ($7.50) who defeated Shoot Out last start in the Hobartville Stakes, and Sir Hallowell ($8) who finished a well beaten 12th.

Wallace had not won a Group 1 feature since 1982 when his filly Mother Of Pearl took out the Queensland Oaks.

Shoot Out has now won four of his nine career starts and Saturday’s victory elevated his career earnings to $549, 700.

He will next contest the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas on March 27 where Wallace will see how Shoot Out handles a run over 2000m before making a decision on whether to run his new stable star in the $1.3million AJC Derby (2400m) on April 10, or wait until the following week for the $1.5million Doncaster Handicap (1600m).

The bumper Randwick meeting on Saturday also included the $150, 000 Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) won by De Lightning Ridge, and the $125, 000 Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) where Hinchinbrook burst into Golden Slipper contention with their upset win.

This Saturday as last weekend’s postponed Group 1 features play out at Flemington, Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse is set to host their own terrific race meeting headlined by the $350, 000 Group 1 Turnpoint Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m).

17 top three-year-olds are engaged to star in the 2010 Randwick Guineas including Hobartville Stakes winner Monton.

Trained by Tim Martin, Monton won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill last start giving the Catbird gelding his third career win from seven starts. The consistent runner has drawn wide for Saturday with barrier 16 and will have to pull out career best speed and form if he is to secure his maiden Group 1 victory.

Runner-up in the Hobartville, Shoot Out, will again face off against Monton on Saturday in the Randwick Guineas. The John Wallace-trained High Chaparral gelding has drawn better with barrier five and is a strong contender with the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes win two starts ago to his name. If successful, Shoot Out will give Wallace his first Group 1 victory in 28 years, the promising three-year-old on his way to the AJC Derby on April 10.

Captain Sonador, third placegetter in the Hobartville Stakes last start, is another Randwick Guineas starter and will start on the outside of Shoot Out in barrier six.

Another classy Randwick Guineas hopeful is Royal Sovereign Stakes runner-up More Than Great. Prepared David Payne, the More Than Ready colt will be looking to improve on his last start tenth place in the Hobartville Stakes.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Viking Legend has secured the coveted barrier one and will be ridden by big race specialist Brad Rawiller.

There are just two fillies in the Randwick Guineas this year, Run For Naara and Monton’s stablemate Indian Ocean. Both fillies have drawn ideally with barriers four and two respectively.

The 2010 Turnpoint Royal Randwick Guineas is scheduled to run as the sixth race on the day’s great eight-event programme and is due to commence at 4:10pm (NSW time).

Other highlights at the meeting are the $125, 000 Group 3 Randwick City Stakes (Race 1 – 12:50pm), $125, 000 Group 3 Skyline Stakes (Race 2 – 1:30pm), $150, 000 Group 2 Challenge Stakes (Race 4 – 2:50pm) and the $125, 000 Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (Race 5 – 3:30pm).

The esteemed $350 000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) will be held at the Royal Randwick on Saturday March 13, 2010 as the headline event on Randwick Guineas Day.

Five group race features will run on the day including the Group 2 Challenge Stakes. But it is the Randwick Guineas that the bulk of punters and spectators will be there to see, and as the race always lures the finest gallopers this year will not disappoint.

As the winner of the Randwick Guineas is exempt from ballot for two of the Sydney Autumn Carnival’s premier events, the Group 1 AJC Derby on April 10 and the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap on April 17, the race is sure to be hotly contested affair with some intense betting markets open.

One of the key preparatory races to the Randwick Guineas is the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m). This year’s Hobartville Stakes is due to take place at Rosehill on Saturday February 27 and many of the three-year-olds who contest this earlier set weights event are sure to back it up with a run in the Randwick Guineas.

Keeping an eye on three-year-olds who perform well in the carnival’s prior races is a good way to get a heads up on Randwick Guineas betting markets.

The Peter Snowden-trained Demerit is a possible starter for the 2010 Randwick Guineas. The Lonhro Colt impressed when he won the Guineas Prelude in September last year but has not placed in a race since. Snowden will first run him in the Royal Sovereign Stakes and the Hobartville Stakes before the Group 1 feature.

On the path to the AJC Derby is John Wallace’s promising three-year-old Shoot Out. Shoot Out will also follow the traditional Royal Sovereign, Hobartville Stakes campaign before being nominated for the Randwick Guineas as Wallace aims for his first Group 1 success in 28 years.

Nominations for the 2010 Randwick Guineas, and the other seven great races running on the March 13 meeting, will close on Monday March 8.

The final acceptances must then be declared before 9am Wednesday March 10 so the final field can be announced later that day.
